U.S. Coast Guard Summary Information on First Aid Kits

1. The US Coast Guard does not test, approve, require carriage of or in any way recommend specific standards or brands of first aid kits in the recreational boating market.

2. The US Coast Guard requirements for commercial vessels:

· Small Commercial Passenger (those which carry more than 6 paying passengers)

REQUIREMENT: Sec.121.710: "A vessel must carry a first aid kit approved in accordance with Sec.160.041 in subchapter Q, or any other standard specified by the Commandment, or a kit with equivalent contents and instructions. For equivalent kits, the contents must be stowed in a suitable container and that is marked, [First Aid Kit]. A first aid kit shall be easily visible and readily available to the crew."

The DAY PAK Soft Case or Day Pak Hard Case meets these regulations as an equivalent kit.

Life Boats:

REQUIREMENT: CFR Subchapter Q 160.041: The list is essentially the same as for small commercial passenger vessels above.

The DAY PAK Soft Case or Day Pak Hard Case meets these regulations as an equivalent kit.

· Life Rafts:

REQUIREMENT: Sec. 160.054, 1-21: The list is identical for lifeboat requirements above.

The DAY PAK Soft Case or Day Pak Hard Case meets these regulations as an equivalent kit.

· Commercial Vessels:

REQUIREMENT: Sec.121.710 First Aid Kits: The list is essentially the same as for lifeboat requirements above.

The DAY PAK Soft Case or Day Pak Hard Case meets these regulations as an equivalent kit.  We recommend our Excursion Pak Hard Case or Excursion Pak Soft Case if distance from medical help is more than 24 hours away and the COASTAL CRUISING PAK, Hard or Soft Case or  COASTAL CRUISING PAK Hard Case if medical help is more than 48 hours away.

· Large Commercial Fishing Vessels:

Requirement: 46 CFR 28.210, which reads: "Each vessel must have on board a complete first aid manual and medicine chest [kit] of a size suitable for the number of individuals on board in a readily accessible location."

Medical Sea Paks such as the DAY PAK Soft Case or Day Pak Hard Case, Excursion Pak Hard Case or Excursion Pak Soft Case, COASTAL CRUISING PAK, Hard or Soft Case,, and the TRANS-OCEAN PAK meets these regulations, based on the three "HOWS"- 1. How many? 2. How far away from professional care? 3. How long the trip?

· Large Non-Fishing Vessels:

REQUIREMENTS: Governed by the United States Public Health Service [USPHS]. The document is known as Ships Medicine Chest.

The Medical Sea Pak TRANS-OCEAN PAK is ideal in meeting these extensive requirements since the modular design allows captains and medical officers to adapt and customize as necessary.
